Web 2.0 Part 1 - Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and RSS  

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Session times: 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (deliverable hours = 6.5)

This hands-on, interactive course guides students new to Web 2.0 through setting up and using these powerful new tools. These basic tools are a great place to start gathering and distributing information in your school, library and beyond.

In this course, participants will learn how to set up and use a blog and a wiki as well as discuss uses for both in the education and library setting. Students will learn the basics of podcasting and explore the tools and techniques necessary to create podcasts. Students will learn about RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and how to use this tool to monitor industry leaders, gather research and share it with students or colleagues.

Objectives

Given definitions of these tools and a demonstration of their uses, students will:

  • Create a blog
    • Add content to the blog
    • Add widgets to the blog
    • Discuss and identify uses for blogs in education/libraries
  • Create a Wiki
    • Add content to a wiki
    • Explore adding users to a wiki
    • Discuss uses for wikis in education/libraries
  • Explore the tools and techniques for creating a podcast
    • Learn to create scripts and storyboards
    • Record a brief podcast using available tools
    • Identify appropriate resources for posting completed podcasts
  • Create an RSS feed account
    • Add feeds to the account
    • Organize feeds
    • Share feeds with other students
    • Discuss applications of RSS in the classroom/library
