The Internet is a wonderful tool, and understanding how to use it safely is a 21st century literacy skill. This class is designed to provide an overview of some of the safety issues that everyone using the Internet needs to understand, as well as how to deal with those issues. Several resources for teaching online safety will be covered.

Objective

Given instructions, resources, access to the BeSafe website (http://besafe.more.net/) and hands-on exercises, participants will recognize the importance of safety awareness with using the Internet and be able to evaluate many available resources for educating students about Internet safety. Topics covered will include:

• Why is raising awareness about Internet safety important?
• Explore the various threats that exist in the area of Internet safety.
• Best practices for keeping safe and secure online.
• Reporting Internet security incidents.
• Explore resources for teaching online safety available through the BeSafe Internet Safety website.
