General

Networking Basics, Level 1  

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Session times: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (deliverable hours = 6.0)

This is an updated replacement for our former Networking 101 Class.

This course is ideal for beginners, either those who are beginning to support networks or those who plan to start a network. Topics include network components, network terminology and basic troubleshooting tips and techniques. Participants will be involved in numerous practical exercises including creating and testing cables, building a small network in class and equipment management.

Objectives

Given the course materials, instructions and exercises, participants will demonstrate their knowledge of basic networking concepts by being able to:

  • Define and differentiate between common network terminology.
  • Describe the general concepts behind each layer of the OSI networking models
  • Recognize by sight or definition various network components such as routers, switches, network interface cards, hubs and patch panels
  • Explain the basics of network cabling including standards, protocols, testing and cable composition
  • Examine network planning topics including logical and physical diagrams and equipment management
  • Describe how to establish a baseline and document the performance of a network
  • Define basic troubleshooting strategies
