General

Securing Wireless LANs  

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Session times: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (deliverable hours = 6.0)

This course is designed to instruct people on how to utilize and implement "best practices" when securing wireless local area networks (LANs). Emphasis will be placed on current trends in wireless security, defining technical terminologies pertaining to wireless security, and how to implement your wireless security strategies via a layered approach. Hands-on exercises will include setting up a wireless LAN, enabling wireless security features on multiple brands of wireless access points and performing signal strength tests.

Objectives

Given information on current trends in wireless security, by the end of the class the participant should have a working knowledge of, or be able to:

  • Define the IEEE 802.11i standard, as it relates to wireless security
  • Set up a wireless access point and configure it for Internet access
  • Implement MAC Filtering on various brands of access points
  • Differentiate between WEP, WPA and WPA2
  • Identify and differentiate between common security features among popular brands of access points
  • Perform signal strength tests for various brands of access points
  • Identify various tools used for wireless network discovery
