General

Wireless LANS, Introduction to  

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Session times: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (deliverable hours = 6.0)

This course is designed for the beginning wireless network administrator and is both lecture and lab oriented. Topics discussed include the "802.11 family" of standards for implementing wireless LANs, as well as common wireless terminologies used in the field today. Hands-on exercises will include setting up a wireless LAN, installing the appropriate drivers to ensure success, and browsing to the wireless access points to configure them.

Objective

Given information on common wireless terminology as well as wireless industry standards, by the end of the class the participant should have a working knowledge of, or be able to:

  • Differentiate between the IEEE standards 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g
  • Define and understand common wireless terminology used in the field today
  • Set up a laptop with a working wireless PC card
  • Set up a wireless access point and configure it to get to the Internet
  • Define "best practices" when setting up wireless LANs
  • Identify various tools used for wireless network analysis
