General

Configuring TCP/IP

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Session times: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (deliverable hours = 6.5)

This one-day course is intended to give the student a more thorough understanding of how the TCP/IP protocol suite functions to interconnect our local and wide-area networks. The intention of the class is to inform and instruct students on basic router and CSU/DSU functions, understanding key IP components, subnetting, and troubleshooting TCP/IP connections.

Objective

Given information on routers, CSU/DSUs, subnetting, troubleshooting, and mathematical exercises, participants should by the conclusion of the class be able to

  • Explain the functions of a router, including path determination
  • Explain what Address Resolution Protocol does
  • Explain the functions of a CSU/DSU
  • Successfully hook up a router and CSU/DSU
  • Explain the format of a MAC address
  • Define and differentiate between the different classes of networks
  • Explain how Subnet Masks function
  • Explain how the concept of Subnetting function
  • Subnet a simple Class C network
  • Define and differentiate between static and dynamic IP addressing
  • Successfully use basic router and CSU/DSU troubleshooting techniques
  • Successfully use TCP/IP troubleshooting techniques
  • Successfully use the network troubleshooting tools PING and TRACERT
