General

Bridging, Switching and Routing (Introduction)  

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Session times: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (deliverable hours = 6.0)

This class is designed for network managers, district technology coordinators or anyone responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining a WAN. It is recommended that you have a basic understanding of networking prior to taking this class. This class covers design and implementation of a WAN, as well as topologies and technologies available with which to build a network. Hands-on exercises will include physical setup of a router, learning basic router configurations and configuring a router to simulate a wide-area connection between two routers.

Objectives

Given information on fundamentals of wide-area networking, as well as popular WAN segmentation methods, the participant should by the end of the class have a working knowledge of or be able to

  • List three popular segmentation methods and how they differ
  • Define VLAN and its purpose in the LAN structure
  • Differentiate between a collision domain and a broadcast domain and how each affect a network
  • Differentiate between the methods of data transportation
  • Differentiate between static routing and dynamic routing
  • Discuss some possible issues that must be considered in WAN design
  • Console into a router for configuration purposes
  • Browse the router IOS and access the help screen
